Mr. Adler

John Adler
Board President
2010-2013

John and his wife, Bernie, have lived in the district for more than 50 years; their eight children are Whitmer graduates. John was educated in Toledo Public Schools and attended the University of Michigan. He is an army veteran who served in Europe during WWII. He passed the State of Ohio CPA exam in 1967. John was employed by the U.S. Treasury Department for 34 years as Office Auditor, Group Manager for examinations of large corporations under control of the Toledo office and Administrative Head of the Toledo office. After retiring from the Treasury Department, he served as a Better Business Bureau arbitrator and a Selective Service Board member (20 years). John has been on the WLS Board of Education for 16 years and is current President.

Mr. Ilstrup Thomas Ilstrup
Board Vice-President
2012-2015

Tom and his wife, Sue, moved into the Washington Local School District more than two decades ago due to the district's excellent reputation. Three of their children are Whitmer graduates and one child currently attends Whitmer. Their oldest son and his wife are special education teachers. Tom was first appointed to the Board of Education in 2004 and was reappointed in 2008 following a short absence. He served as Board Vice President in 2010. Tom is a legal professional with his office in the WLS district and is an adjunct faculty member of Heidelburg University and Owens Community College. Parental involvement in education is one of Tom's passions. He has served with numerous school, parent and community organizations, including as President of the WLS Band & Orchestra Boosters and Trilby Park Shelter House Board.

Mr. Erme

Frank Erme
Board Member
2010-2013

Frank served as a teacher, coach, dean, associate principal and athletic director at Whitmer for more than 30 years. Three years after retirement, he was appointed to the WLS Board of Education on which he has served 16 years, including terms as President and Vice-President. Frank and his late wife, Nancy, a teacher and coach, dedicated themselves to Whitmer athletics. The Nancy Erme Relays were named in her memory and Quast Field was renamed Frank Ermie Field in 1989. Their children are Whitmer graduates. Frank has been honored in numerous halls of fame and received the National Football Foundation Distinguished Service Award in 2007.

Mr. Hunter

David Hunter
Board Member
2012-2015

David has been married to his wife, Beth, for 33 years. Their three children are all Whitmer graduates and currently school teachers. Dave has been on the WLS Board of Education since 1994 and is the current President. He has dedicated himself to the community, serving as a Junior Achievement advisor, Trilby Baseball coach and commissioner, United Way Campaign Chairman, Red Cross Blood Mobile Coordinator, and Special Olympics Corporate Sponsor Coordinator. After working 30+ years in the grocery business, Dave went back to college to obtain his Master's Degree in Special Education and is now teaching high school moderate to severe special education. Dave is in his 20th year on the Board.

Mr. Zuber

Steve Zuber
Board Member
2010-2013

Steve has been on the Board since 1997 and has served terms as Vice President and President. Both he and his son are Whitmer graduates. Steve was a Toledo Fire Fighter from 1969 until his retirement in 1999 and now serves on the Board of Directors of the Toledo Fire Fighters Federal Credit Union. Steve is a dedicated donor at the Red Cross and has donated blood more than 470 times, equal to almost 59 gallons. He became a bone marrow donor in 1989 and has given numerous speeches for the Red Cross to promote bone marrow donations. Steve collects tabs at many places to support the Ronald McDonald House which provides food and housing for parents of sick children. He is also involved in several community programs.



The Board makes policy decisions, adopts budgets and tax rates, and collectively determines final positions on issues affecting the school district.

All board meetings are held at the Administration Building, 3505 W. Lincolnshire Blvd. The public is welcome to attend. Dates for the regular monthly meetings are established in January.
